2003 Lifesaving Award
The Lifesaving Award is for a rescue performed that resulted in the saving of a life.  On August 14, 2003, Mr. Gary George was involved in a non-injury motor vehicle crash.  Burlington Fire Department and a Skagit County Ambulance Med 1 were dispatched to the scene.  When the fire department personnel arrived, they found Mr. George unconscious, not breathing and without a pulse.  They immediately provided basic life support and defibrillation.  Through the collective efforts of Burlinton Fire Department's Chief Mark Anderson, Assistant Fire Chief Glen Staheli, Captain Lloyd Tjeerdsma, and firefighters Jerry Butterfield, Laine Hogle, Brad Judy, Larry Rogers and Casey Tjeerdsma, this fine crew "bought" the time needed to save Mr. George's life.  They further assisted Med 1 Paramedics Miklos Preysz and Timothy Moser in the treatment and transport of Mr. George to Skagit Valley Hospital's Emergency Room.  The Lifesaving Award was awarded to all who participated in this valiant act of teamwork that resulted in saving Gary George's life.  Burlington Fire Department personnel were called to a scene during the awards ceremony, so Burlington Mayor Tjeerdsma accepted the awards in their behalf.
