On December 15, 2004, Sedro-Woolley truck driver Jim Swett was at the scene of a three vehicle crash near Marysville on Interstate 5 that killed one woman and injured at least seven others. Two of the vehicles were on fire and the third vehicle, which had five persons inside, was in danger of being engulfed by flames. As the intense heat melted a window and the taillights of the vehicle, Mr. Swett and another person managed to attach a towing strap from Swett’s truck onto the third vehicle and tow it away from the flames. According to Trooper Lance Ramsay, Mr. Swett’s quick thinking and heroics saved four lives. ......................................................................................[return to top] During a check of the Heart Lake parking lot on the evening of Sunday, July 24, 2005, Anacortes Police Officer Chad Pruiett spoke with a man who said that his wife had been swimming in the lake and that she was holding onto a buoy and was unable to swim to shore. After Officer Pruiett’s arrival, the woman attempted to swim to shore but was struggling to stay on the surface. A friend of the woman entered the water and began swimming to the woman and Officer Pruiett also entered the water. The woman’s friend was able to hold the victim at the surface but was unable to swim to shore. Officer Pruiett took the victim and swam with her to shore. Paramedics from the Anacortes Fire Department arrived at the scene and the woman was taken to Island Hospital where she was treated and released. ......................................................................................[return to top] The Ellen Morgan CPR Award is reserved for individuals who have actually saved a life using CPR skills. This award was established to honor Ellen Morgan, who was present at the ceremony and instrumental in the initial establishing and development of Skagit County’s CPR program as a regional faculty member and an Instructor Trainer of the American Heart Association.
When Milton and Suzanne Jenkins arrived at the scene of a motor vehicle accident on September 18, 2004, several people were trying to remove Nicholas Pfeifer who was in his car seat in the back of a car mostly submerged in water off of Highway 9 north of Sedro-Woolley. Milton assisted in removing Nicholas from the car and get the child to the shoulder of the road. Nicholas was blue, his limbs were limp, Milton tilted Nicholas’s head back, looked into his mouth, pinched his nose, and blew a couple of breaths. After a third breath, Nicholas spat up some water and Milton turned his head to help drain the water out. Nicholas’s heart was beating. About that time, the ambulance arrived, Nicholas was flown to Harborview where he was treated and released the following day. ......................................................................................[return to top] . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
