According to the results of a new study, published in February’s issue of Pediatrics, the rate of fatalities attributed to unintentional suffocation and strangulation in the first year of life quadrupled between 1984 and 2004.
While such tragedies are still relatively rare, the increase in deaths coincided with an increase in parents choosing to bed-share with their infants. Based on the recommendations of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the CPSC, Safe Kids Worldwide believes that co-sleeping is not a recommended practice. If the parents feel strongly about being close to their child, the best alternative is to put the child’s crib or bassinet in the parents’ bedroom.
